Orthotics Q & A

What are orthotics?

Orthotics are prescription medical devices you place in your shoes to improve support or comfort. The experienced team at Restoration Healthcare understand the importance of proper foot support for overall health and pain reduction and can create a custom orthotic to fit your needs.

Your foot supports much of your body weight with each step you take. If you have low arches, a foot deformity, or some other foot condition that alters your step, your body redistributes your weight to your other joints, including your knees, hips, and lower back.

A foot orthotic can correct the foot condition and improve your gait to lessen the stress and pain on your other joints.

What are the types of orthotics?

There are two primary types of orthotics. The team at Restoration Healthcare determines the type you need during your evaluation. The types include:

Functional orthotics

Functional orthotics are designed to improve the function of your foot and gait. These types of orthotics are generally made of a hard material so your foot gets the support it needs.

Accommodative orthotics

Accommodative orthotics tend to be softer and prevent the formation of foot ulcers, corns, or calluses. If you have diabetes, you may benefit from these types of orthotics to prevent any unnecessary foot conditions.

Orthotics are used to treat a range of foot and health conditions, including:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Bursitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Heel or ankle pain

Orthotics can also be developed to improve athletic performance.

In addition to custom orthotics, the team at Restoration Healthcare also offers knee and low back braces.

Am I a good candidate for orthotics?

The team at Restoration Healthcare determines if you’re a good candidate for orthotics during a consultation.

While you may be coming to the office with concerns about your feet, the integrative practice takes a more holistic approach to care and conducts a comprehensive evaluation to understand your whole health and wellness needs.

During your evaluation, the team reviews your medical history and symptoms and performs a physical exam. The team may also assess your step and gait to look for abnormalities that may benefit from an orthotic.

If you’re a good candidate for an orthotic, the team takes a mold of your foot to create your custom orthotic.

Orthotics may alleviate many pain conditions, including low back and joint pain. For a comprehensive evaluation, contact Restoration Healthcare by phone or online today.
